Haslemere Hockey Club’s ladies’ second team had a special guest watching when they beat Bournemouth’s ladies’ third team 3-0, a result which moved Haslemere up to fourth place in the league.

The match was nearly called off because of a huge hailstorm, but the storm subsided in time and the match went ahead.

Captain Heidi Wells was delighted that her mother, Jackie Wells, was able to see a strong team performance and a victory as she came along to watch on her 90th birthday.

Goals from Jules Bernays, Cindi Pretorius and Hannah Baker provided the entertainment, and coach Tony Richards organised a bouquet of flowers and a card from the team which was presented to Jackie afterwards.

“Having mum come to watch me playing hockey on her 90th birthday was a truly special occasion,” said Heidi. “Mum knows how much I love the game and my teammates and it meant the world to me that she was able to come and watch and meet the squad. She was touched by their welcome and lovely card and flowers. Now mum understands why I love Haslemere Hockey Club.”

Heidi has played hockey at Haslemere for many years, joining Gregarians in 1982 before they merged with Haslemere Hockey Club in the early 2000s. She is a loyal supporter of the club and a huge fan of the game. Heidi plays for a regional masters side and won a gold medal last year when playing for England over-55s in the European Championships in Valencia.
